When I was asked to read The Simian Transcript, it took me a few stories to understand Kopaska-Merkel’s beautiful madness. The stories collected in this tome are intense, often dark, and always adventurous. With titles like Night of the Wereduck, Captain Marshmallow, and Take them Bowling, you know straight off this collection isn’t going to be a normal genre read.

Being a zombie author, the story “It started with the Rhinos” really stood out for me. A tale of undead animals,
reanimated with various super powers- what’s not to love?

Another piece entitled Street People envisions a whole new type of nightmarish prison where wrong doers are literally turned into the  pavement of the streets that people walk on and Gifts, which features a paper-mache’ snake eating
people alive. This book contains a vast array of genres and weird tales, all brought seamlessly together, that will leave the reader either running for cover or singing Mr. Kopaska-Merkel’s praise.

I cannot imagine not outright loving or hating this book as the work within leaves little room for the
middle ground with the strong emotions the writing evokes.
